Every summer at Green Pond, something happens on the lake that has been happening for generations — and if you know to look for it, it tells you everything about what kind of community this is.
In the early morning, before the motor boats are out and while the water is still flat, most summer mornings, a fleet of small Sunfish sailboats appears on the northern end of the lake at the Green Pond Yacht Club. The sailors are children — some as young as seven or eight, some teenagers who started in those same small boats years ago. They are learning to read the wind, to tack, to right a capsized boat, to race. They are learning on the same lake their parents learned on, in some cases taught by the same instructors who taught their parents.
The Green Pond Yacht Club’s junior sailing program is one of those community institutions that sounds modest when you describe it — a summer sailing program for kids — but feels significant when you witness it. Because what it actually is, is a tradition of this community passing something specific and valuable to the next generation. The children who go through this program don’t just learn to sail. They become part of Green Pond in a way that lasts a lifetime.
Many of the families who buy homes at Green Pond today cite the Yacht Club and the junior sailing program as one of the primary reasons they chose this community over others. It represents something that cannot be manufactured in a newer development: a community with enough history and continuity to have a next generation worth teaching.
This summer’s program wrapped its season with the annual beginning and end-of-summer regattas — a race across the lake that, for the youngest sailors, feels like an enormous accomplishment, and for the older ones, feels like something they’ll want to come back to next year.
