Most people who have not been to Green Pond in winter assume it goes quiet — that the community closes up in September and doesn’t reopen until Memorial Day. This is one of the most persistent misconceptions about life here, and January is the month that corrects it most dramatically.
When the temperature drops and holds for several days, the lake freezes. Not everywhere at once — the spring-fed portions stay open longer, and the shallower areas freeze first. But when a full freeze comes, the lake becomes something entirely different from what it is in summer. The west shore mountain ridge, dusted with snow, reflect off a surface that is silver-white and still. The sound is extraordinary — or rather, the absence of sound is. There is a quiet at Green Pond in January that has no equivalent in the summer months, and for the year-round residents and winter visitors who know it, it is every bit as prized.
Ice skating happens when conditions allow — and when they do, it is one of those experiences that adults remember from childhood and children never forget. There is something about skating on a private lake, ringed by a snow-covered mountain, with no one around but your neighbors and your family, that is genuinely irreplaceable.
The cross-country ski trails through the community protected woodlands are another winter discovery for many Green Pond residents. Miles of trails through hundreds of acres of preserved land — quiet, beautiful, and available only to Stockholders and their guests.
The year-round resident population at Green Pond has grown noticeably over the past several decades. Remote work has made it possible for families who might once have been weekend-only visitors to make Green Pond their primary address — and January is, not surprisingly, when many of them feel most certain they made the right decision.
